Strong guitar playing, great songwriting, and fiery performance are a rare combination to find in one package these days, though that is exactly what Matt Fassas presents. Fassas’ musical roots began digging around backyard campfires all over the hills of Eastern Kentucky. Classic rock cover bands and coffee shop open mics led to an early passion for music and songwriting. After expanding his horizons and studying classical and jazz guitar performance through his college years, he moved his efforts to Upstate South Carolina in 2008 to find himself as a full time guitarist for hire. Fassas continued to hone his songwriting craft until finally self-releasing his first solo album, For When You Don’t Sleep, in 2012. It was an outwardly acoustic adventure seated in blues but reaching far into the realm of alternative and beyond. Following that was MF’s Inferno. A full blown concept album digging deep into MF’s eclectic tastes and versatile chops.
Fassas is currently working on his next release, Trip, which is being produced and engineered by John Keane (Widespread Panic, R.E.M.). Trip features a collection of songs stretching from blazing bluegrass stomp to sludgy blues and hard driving rock peppered with Floyd-esque jams and three part vocal harmonies. MF’s lyrics are clever, honest, and stern. Words that convey wisdom and a passion for life, love, and happiness while keeping a distinct southern charm about him. “I can tell that you don’t trust me, that just tells me that you’re prob’ly pretty smart.” Fassas admits in the opening line of his song “Change Your Mind.”
While recording the album, Fassas continues to perform in a variety of scenarios across the Southeast as a solo artist, with his band The Matt Fassas Trip, or with progressive instrumental group The Kentucky Gentleman’s Band.
