The Annex Band · 8:00pm

Picture this: five, sometimes six guys sitting in a living room with acoustic guitars, all at varying levels of competency, hammering away at the most basic songs we could find. This is the genesis of the Annex Band. It was quickly determined that six acoustic guitars made for a less than harmonic experience. Brian had long wanted to play drums, though he never had, so at the next jam he brought a snare drum. Let’s just say the snap of the snare drum was not a welcome addition. Chopsticks were employed to lessen the sound, but quickly the “band” was dismissed to the annex. Adam decided to pick up the childhood violin, blow the dust off and give it a run, as did Philip with the cello. Mike picked the mandolin, Lewis championed the bass, and the rest, as they say, is history. The band consists of three teachers and multiple parents of FDNSC and Asheville City Schools. The musicianship has evolved as has our relationship over the decade that we have played together. The one thing that holds strong over the years is our love of coming together every Thursday to play music, sing loudly, and celebrate all that is good in life!

Pop Quiz! · 8:00pm

The original Teacher Band began 7 years ago when FDNSC teachers, Brian, Robyn, Brady, and Melissa decided to prepare a teacher entry into the Francine Delany Middle School talent event, Expression Fest. Since then, various versions of the Teacher Band have come together to rehearse and play at a popular West Asheville backyard gathering under such names as “Tardy Slip,” “Hall Pass,” and others. When the Teacher Band was recruited to play Funky Formal 2, they merged with the existing female basement band talents of Kate Justen (FEAST), Amy Powchak (Vance Elem), and Courtenay Constable (East McDowell Middle ) and officially formed Pop Quiz!. Tyrone and Naomi have joined the FDNSC portion of the band and they have also recruited the teacher talents of Brian Powchak (Buncombe County Schools) and Bart Murphy (Asheville High) to make this a true public education collaboration! This year at Funky Formal 4, former basement band member and FDNSC parent/Claxton teacher, Krista Stearns, will be gracing the stage in a special guest performance you won’t want to miss! There may be some other surprise guest appearances as well. With band mottos such as “easy and cheesy” and “good enough”, the mostly self-taught musicians don’t promise musical precision, but they DO promise crowd-pleasing, danceable throwback songs, and a good time!
