Cheley Tackett‘s the “real deal,” a “powerhouse singer” & “engaging performer” possessing “a talent with words & storytelling.” ThinkCountry says “if this artist comes to your town, go. Just go! Brilliant.”

John Looney and Anna Kline (Grits & Soul) called Asheville home for five years before moving to John’s native Kentucky. Their time playing music here in Asheville was pivotal to their musical growth. Together they spread the gospel of Southern sound with their own brand of hillbilly R&B.

Cheley's latest album, Buckeye, was given a 4 out of 5 star rating in the March 2018 edition of the UK's Country Music People. The album features collaborations with some of Nashville’s most respected songwriters and performers, including: Grammy nominated 2019 ACM & CMA New Artist of the Year Ashley McBryde who co-wrote three of the tracks and provides background vocals on “My Best Dress.” ; Noted songwriter Lisa Carver is a co-writer on the tracks “All She Knows is Rain,” “Never Could Leave,” and “Magic Still Happens” as well as lending background vocals to the album; Nicole Witt of Farewell Angelina provides background vocals; Shelly Fairchild, who charted with "You Don't Lie Here Anymore,” joins Tackett for the duet “Never Could Leave.”

Cheley is a MerleFest Chris Austin Songwriting Contest winner, Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk winner, Independent Acoustic Music Award finalist (Best Song & Female Vocalist Categories), JPF Song of the Year winner, and 2018 International Songwriting Competition semi-finalist in the Americana Category. Maverick Magazine said, "she writes with the deep confidence and total abandon that only a true artist is capable of....One of the most powerful, soulful singers in the business."

Grits & Soul · 7:00pm

At the heart of Grits & Soul are Anna Kline and John Looney. The duo has made music together for almost 10 years now, spreading the gospel of Southern sound.

Their songwriting is best described as hillbilly R&B: influenced by the redemptive strains of gospel, the drawling tremolo of rhythm and blues, and the raw twang of rural American life. The duo conjures up the pain and the pleasure of calloused hands, tilled earth, and a steel needle digging into a wax 45. Their seamless harmonies and stirring melodies will tear your heart in two.

Together they lend their voices to the rich tradition of Southern songwriters who explore and push the boundaries of American roots music. Now settled in Kentucky, they take their place in a (common)wealth of musical talent.

Their newest collection of songs is a 180° (re)turn to their country and soul music roots for inspiration. They will head into back into the studio in June 2020. It is their most daring contribution yet and showcases their dedication to the musical traditions of the American South.

When they aren’t performing as Grits & Soul, you can find them huddled in a group of late-night pickers, onstage with Don Rogers and The Apostlebillies, or playing square dances with The Local Honeys.
