RealWomenRealSongs is the brainchild of Cary Cooper. She hand selected 21 fantastic songwriters from across the country to create songs weekly to prompts for an entire year. This is the 2nd in the series presented virtually at Isis Music Hall.

Each week the women are given a new prompt to write their songs from. And on a specific day of the week, they each post their newly written, un-tweaked songs on social media to share the creative process with the public. Among the participants are Sara Hickman, Tracy Grammer, Alice Peacock, Ellis Delaney, Terri Hendrix, Ty Greenstein (from Mouths of Babes) Kate Klim, Shanna in a Dress, Liv Greene and others, including Cary herself. This is the third season of RWRS.

In 2014, Cary left her native state of Texas for the mountains of Western North Carolina where she's been performing and teaching ever since. In late April she will be moving to Nashville, so this will be her last performance as an Asheville local. Cary’s songs are simple, and quirky in nature, drawing you in with pop melodies and then hitting you over the head with lyrics that are deceptively deep. Guitars in the Classroom calls Cary “the Anne LaMott of songwriting...except she can get to the heart of things in 3 minutes instead of 200 pages.”

In addition to being a captivating performer, she is also a dynamic teacher.
In early 2011, Cary was spotted by the producers of Troubadour, TX, a new TV docu/drama series that debuted nationwide in September, 2011 on the CW network. Along with several other Texas songwriters, Cary was cast on the first season of the show.

"I love great musical surprises, and Troubadour,TX has allowed me to discover some really significant singer-songwriter surprises. And one of those is Cary Cooper. From the moment I met her, she was singing an original composition that was one of the most delightful surprises in my own personal journey of making music...The song was "Suzanne", and from that song on, Cary has continued to impress me not only with her original and unique lyrics, but with her enchanting, one-of-a-kind musical compositions that absolutely catch you by surprise, and then never leave you alone. A very special singer-songwriter with her best songs yet to come."

Tracy Grammer

Called “one of the finest singers and musicians anywhere in folkdom” (Boston Globe), Tracy Grammer is among contemporary folk music's most beloved artists, renowned for her pure voice, deft guitar and violin work, and incantatory storytelling. She has recorded and performed with Joan Baez and Mary Chapin Carpenter and enjoyed 12 consecutive years as one of folk radio's 50 top-played artists, both alone and with the late Dave Carter. Her eleventh album, LOW TIDE, is the first of her albums to feature her original songs and was the #9 most-played record on folk radio in 2018. Grammer and touring partner Jim Henry currently offer a monthly livestream series called “Six Feet Apart" via YouTube; additionally, she is busy with studio work, cat whispering, and a memoir. Grammer lives in Greenfield, Mass.

Shanna In A Dress

Shanna in a Dress is your quirky best friend in Boulder who hates wearing pants known for her candor, clever wordplay, and fearlessly personal songwriting. Her tunes bring audiences to real tears of laughter and heartbreak in one fell swoop. in 2020 she has been recognized in 4 song contests, including a Kerrville New Folk winner and Falcon Ridge Emerging Artist.

Shanna in a Dress is biking across the US in the summer of 2021 playing outdoor concerts with
her debut studio album in tow and a Nashville move in her sights.

MOUTHS OF BABES

“If I was forced to categorize it, I’d call it modern folk. It’s powerful, romantic, and giddy. And the two are insanely infectious together onstage, like a musical and a personal love fest all at once.” – Huffington Post
With more than a dozen albums and over a thousand shows between them, Ty Greenstein and Ingrid Elizabeth of Mouths of Babes are no strangers to the contemporary folk-Americana music scene. For years, their respective bands Girlyman and Coyote Grace captivated thousands of loyal fans as they criss-crossed the country, rocked festival main stages, and toured with the likes of the Indigo Girls and Dar Williams. Now, as Mouths of Babes, this award-winning duo has distilled the very best of the songwriting, musicianship, and humor of their previous groups into a sound that brings more style and depth than ever before.

"This pair of road warriors sounds refreshingly new and breathes new life into a seemingly overcrowded genre. Those who enjoy acoustic music rich in passion and fervor would be wise to check [them] out." –Submerge Mag
